The Account settings menu option is where you control the global setting for your account on SciSpace.net. Here you can edit your user details, change your theme, upload your site picture, specify friendship moderation, establish moderation of your blog comments, and decide if you want comments emailed to you.
The Edit User Details page allows you to modify personal preferences and settings which affect how others interact with your content in SciSpace.net. The following options are available:
The theme that you are using determines the banner image, the appearance of the text and the page layout. If you would like to change your theme to one of the other ones provided, follow these steps:

Your site picture is an icon to represent yourself throughout your personal landscape. You can upload up to ten in total, and then choose which one you would like to be your default. You can change the default at any timme, or choose to have no icon at all.

SciSpace.net is a framework with a lot of flexibility. A lot of this comes from the many ways there are to use the concept of 'communities'. Here are a few different ways to use SciSpace.net:
Some communities are best run in both an open and public way. These are typically communities interested in generic science and technique issues. The strength of these communities lies in their wide membership. An example of such a community on SciSpace.net is the Geobrowsers community, which has the aim of sharing information about tools that can be used to visualise environmental data.
There are some groups of researchers who will see communities in SciSpace.net as providing an opportunity for 'publication' of their ideas and outputs. This approach replaces what would previously have been represented by a web site, but avoids the overheads of setting up the web site, uses the opportunities SciSpace.net provides for group authorship, and exploits the public exposure of SciSpace.net. One example on SciSpace.net is the Help community.
Project-based communities can use SciSpace.net to exchange information, engage in discussion, and share files; the different content tools provide both the essential flexibility and structure simultaneously. SciSpace.net provides the controls over privacy and access that are required for projects that need some information to remain private to members of the project some of the time, but may also want other information to be public.
These communities may be more ad hoc than project communities, and often much smaller. SciSpace.net provides the environment to enable 2-3 researchers to structure their discussions and share data. The example Åkermanite community provides an example of this way of working.
Many of the functions in SciSpace.net, including creating and commenting on blogs, and editing wiki pages, use the Elgg editor. This is a window that approximates an WYSIWYG editor.

The combination of the quasi-WYSIWYG buttons and the HTML window provide a powerful set of tools, although users of MediaWiki may miss some of the tools that that infrastructure provides (such as keystrokes for creating headings and tables; these have to be added manually using the HTML editor).
Once you have found others with similar interests - or perhaps you are part of a research groups or a course/class - you may want to have a more formal community setting. This is where Elgg's powerful community building features can be used.
Once a community has been formed, those who join the community can contribute to the collective blog and file repository. This is an excellent way to share ideas and to collaborate together.
Technically, a community has all the same properties and abilities as a user. That means it's got its own blog, wiki, profile, resources and file repository. The difference is that anyone who's a member of a community can upload content to those spaces, and the owner of that community has the ability to edit and remove content.
In SciSpace.net, anyone can create a community.
You can restrict access to your communities. For example, you might want to vet users before you let them in.
Community administrators can change the ownership of a community. Ownership is set from the community settings, and just involves typing the username of the user who will become the new owner.
You can build ad-hoc communties around shared interests within SciSpace.net. For example:
SciSpace.net makes use of its extensive tagging architecture to create these linkages.
Access controls are one of the most important aspects of Elgg. This feature allows you to control exactly who has access to your content.
When you create any item of content in Elgg - be it a profile item, file upload, weblog post, etc - it has an access level associated with it. By default, the available options are:
When you join a community, it will be added to these options. Thereafter, when you create or edit content, you can restrict it only to members of that community. Note that doing so does not automatically place that object in the community.
Security can only be as tight as users let it be. If you have content that you don't want other people to see, it is your responsibility to ensure that you set the access control appropriately. Do not assume that the default setting is the one you want – the default setting is "logged in users" for blogs and "private" for wikis.
You can easily create new access controls containing exactly the people you want to see items of content; you can create a custom group that only you see.
If you want to delete users from an access control group:
To remove a group, just click Delete this group next to the access control's name.
How secure is SciSpace.net really?
The answer may come down to the fact that the underlying technology is, like many players in this space, released as open source, with some of the tools being developed by unpaid enthusiasts. No one can guarantee that SciSpace.net is 100% secure, like any other software system.
Because we have no guarantees about security, we aim to be vigilent in checking security regularly. The SciSpace team is looking for information leaks from a variety of sources, and we set up a number of tests of different scenarios. We are also in contact with some of the developers to discuss issues of security.

Your 'Profile' is where you can store personal information about yourself. This information can be private, public or shared with any of your defined access groups.
Your profile serves two purposes:
Information from your profile is not only linked to other people but also to resources - this helps you find information which could assist with your studies and research!
Profile information includes likes, dislikes, skills etc., and gives you control over who can access this information (we strongly recommend you do not make your email address or home address public).
Once you enter information into the various fields (make sure each item you put in is comma separated), the system will automatically create tags which allow you to see anyone else who has an interest, like, dislike or skill that matches yours. This is great for finding others with similar interests.
Any fields you leave blank will not show on your profile page.
Note: The profile field 'Brief description' is used to populate your sidebar profile.
When you have finished, press the 'Save your profile' button at the bottom of the page.
Elgg supports the FOAF standard for sharing profile and network information (although it is not continuing to develop in this area). If you already have profile information entered in another application which also supports FOAF, you can use it to populate the profile fields:

Resources is an RSS aggregator. RSS feeds are chronologically ordered abstractions of website content that allow you to keep track of new material from a central location. In practice this means you can subscribe to the RSS feeds of weblogs you are interested in, and receive automatic notification of new posts. Most feed readers, including this one, allow you to read an aggregated view of all the content you have subscribed to.
To subscribe to an RSS feed, you need to know its URL. Then, perform the following steps:
The system will acknowledge your subscription request and automatically fetch new content.
You can now keep up-to-date on all your RSS feeds by clicking on the 'View aggregator' submenu option.
The 'feeds' submenu option provides a list of all the RSS content you have subscribed to, and 'popular feeds' displays the most popular subscriptions in the system (a great way to quickly see which feeds are popular).
Subscribed feeds don't have to come from outside SciSpace.net; SciSpace.net provides RSS feeds for user activity, weblog posts and file uploads; it's easy to keep track of a user's file additions, for example, simply by subscribing to their files RSS feed.
User RSS feeds are linked to in three places:
SciSpace.net also provides RSS feeds for tag-based searches, either per-user or throughout the system. This means that you could subscribe solely to files uploaded by a particular user with a particular tag, or files uploaded by everyone marked with the same tag. The system-wide tag-based RSS feeds also let you keep track of users or communities that list particular tags in their profile fields.
Note: RSS feeds just list content which is marked as public.
Highlighting your content from other services (and importing from other blogging tools)
If your external subscriptions are your own content, you can post any new items from your feeds to your main blog. When the RSS feed is brought into SciSpace.net and published to your blog, content will appear the next time you update the source. This functionality allows you to maintain your blog elsewhere and have the content posted within your SciSpace.net community.
